The Escape- Thursday afternoon

Sabine hadn't really allowed herself to get excited about actually getting off the planet for a bit until they were off the planet. Whether it was her version of home or not, even if she had complicated feelings about things there for a lot of reasons, it was good to actually be able to go back for a bit.

"So do you have any rules about the number of explosives on your shop?"

That was another thing making her feel better.

Sabine looked over at him, but didn't need to be told twice. She pushed on the controls to send them through the portal and said, "That's better."

Kanan grinned faintly, and then glanced toward her.

"So you can fly one of these things, huh? Figured, but it's good to know. Hera's got a peripheral ship to go with the Ghost; that's one more thing we could put you to work in, if you wanted."

"I could do it," she said thoughtfully. "I don't have a ton of experience, but I took flight class so I wouldn't get rusty."

"Well, then I'll keep that in mind. The Phantom's only any good if there's someone to make use of her. Good for making trips planetside that the Ghost is too conspicuous for." He smiled her way. "The more things you can do, the more things we can put you to work doing. Not that you need to prove yourself. Having a mind to get involved is already a damn good start."

He nodded down toward the planet the portal had spat them out over.

"You know where we're going? How about you do the honors, then. Don't scratch the paint."

As if the paint could be so easily scratched.

"Really?" Sabine asked, sounding surprised.

"Consider it an audition for the Phantom," Kanan replied, gesturing with one hand toward the world below. "If things get hairy I'll step in, but you said you took flying classes? That's Skywalker, right? Unless Hera ever starts teaching it, you couldn't have a better teacher."

Even if he was an ass.

"Okay," she said, grabbing the controls without hesitating and directing the ship towards it. "I'd kind of like to see the difference in their classes now."

"Honestly," Kanan noted, "so would I. Skywalker," it felt strange calling him 'Master' for reasons he couldn't put a finger on, so he generally didn't, "was a pilot of no small ability back during the war. But Hera..."

He gave a low whistle.

"Now there's a pilot who can fly anything."

Like that goddamn Smoothride.

"I'm looking forward to seeing that," Sabine admitted.

Okay maybe she was getting her hopes up a tiny bit.

"I'll make sure you do," Kanan replied, smiling faintly.

Yup. Here came the dadness.

Sorry, Sabine.

Oh no, not the dadness, how would she ever handle it.

"How long have you two known each other?" she asked, still looking ahead to make sure she was clearly focused on the flying, since the person whose ship it was was right there.

"About a month shy of two years now," Kanan replied. Not that he'd been keeping track or anything.

Honest.

"She had me impressed from the first word that came out of her mouth," he added, smiling a little. Not quite the happystupid smile he wore when talking to Kitty or Summer or even Eliot about her, but... Well. Definitely a smile. "And we got into trouble... pretty much immediately."

"Somehow that doesn't surprise me," Sabine said evenly. "Only two years? I would have figured longer."

"Yeah?" Kanan sounded faintly surprised by that, actually. But then, his idea of a long time spent in another person's company was... skewed, somewhat, but living life on the run without forming connections for about eight years solid. "Well, I guess when you're in over your head the way we've been over ours together, you come to put your trust in a person faster."

Or you became entirely smitten.

But really, that part had been almost immediate.

"You two just seem like a package deal," she said, considering whether that was the right way to say it, and deciding that it was.

Kanan leaned his head back for a few seconds as he mulled that phrase over. And then he nodded his approval.

"Yeah, that sounds about right."

He'd more or less pledged himself to Hera for life, at this point. 'Package deal' was pretty much spot-on.

"A package deal with Chopper," she added, easing them down towards the planet's atmosphere. Nothing fancy.

Okay, Kanan couldn't help but laugh a little at that.

"Yeah, Chopper's along for the ride, too. He was here first, I'm mostly just lucky he tolerates me."

With fewer applications of his stunner than before, too.

"I think he tolerates everyone who's not Hera," Sabine said. "I'm trying to wear him down."

"Well, if you figure out the secret, could you let me in on that?" Kanan grinned a little. "I'm pretty sure he's just stubborn. Possibly mostly for show."

It was hard to tell, with Chop.

"So far I've themed the junkyard sculptures after him, but that might take more of a discerning eye," she said.

"Yeah, I'm... not much of an artist," Kanan allowed. "Maybe I'll leave the sculpture to you and figure something else out."

... Something.

Yup.

"And you're not angling to paint him, anyway."

Her motives were pure and simple, and also artistic.

Kanan blinked and turned a faintly impressed, mostly incredulous look Sabine's way.

"You want to paint him?"

Sabine shrugged. "Everyone could use a new look now and then."
