A store on the mainland- Tuesday evening

Sabine was trying very hard not to be a full-on crab today. She didn't like this barely-contained itchy feeling, she didn't like that she hadn't been able to get rid of it, and because she was on StuCo and felt like she should make an appearance at things like prom, she had to actually get ready for it. And she'd determined that stores here didn't really cater to her style but she didn't have the know-how to make something herself, and wah wah wah.

So she'd enlisted Astrid's help in going to a store on the mainland where maybe they could find something for Friday. At the very least it got them off the island for a bit.

And she had to admit, she hated the clothes here a little less today. "Some of these things might not be so bad," she conceded.

Astrid glanced over at Sabine from where she was maybe taking a little too long admiring the softness of one fabric, the shininess of another, with a faint grin. "Some of these are really nice," she admitted, but she realized, too, that the last time she'd really gone shopping for something like this was when Starr dragged her to that Clothestime in the next town over to get her that pink dress, her first bra, and, reluctantly, her hiking boots. A bit of a step-up from a second-hand store in a strip mall. "I almost don't even know where to start."

Except maybe just feeling more of the fabrics. Of course she'd be drawn to crushed velvet. She was from the '90s. How fortunate for her aesthetic that it was sort of back in style.

"Not pink," Astrid said, almost immediately, despite the fact that she'd pulled out something very obviously pink for closer inspection and admiration.

After all, it wasn't that Astrid disliked pink. But Ingrid did. So pink was out.

Her shoulders shifted a little as she considered the halter cut of the dress, wondering if she'd be comfortable with them exposed like that.

"Oh, and it's got flowers," said Astrid, who couldn't help being a little delighted by that detail, and she went to take it from Sabine for a closer look. Red was usually such a sensual color, but the flowered pattern softened it up nicely, she thought, though maybe she might want to actually go a little sultrier, a little va-va-voom. Her mood was definitely encouraging her to consider the idea, and it wouldn't even matter what anyone else thought about it, since she'd be gone in about a week and a half after it.

"I'm definitely trying this on," she decided, before her eyes danced over the dresses to try to pick out something to suggest for Sabine in return, but coming up with a faint realization. "I think you've got a better eye for this than I do."

"If you were hoping to have someone to save you from a fashion disaster," said Astrid, laughing, "then you really brought the wrong person. If in had any sense of style to begin with, it'll be about thirty years out of date."

But the wheels were in motion and she started to consider things speculatively. "Actually...how do you feel about tulle?"

"Definitely the fluffy stuff," Astrid confirmed with a nod before yanking what she'd spotted (it was kind of hard to miss, but that's sort of what she figured she'd be looking for when it came to Sabine). "Like this."

It was so, so fluffy. Now that she had it out, Astrid could only imagine Sabine all but drowning in it.

"I thought you might like it," said Astrid, feeling an unusual rush of pride and beaming over it a little. "The sparkles seem like a really you touch, too, but it did not look quite so...puffy on the rack."

Astrid shrugged. "We'll add it to the try-on pile," she said. "No point in settling for the first thing that catches our eyes, either. We've got plenty of time."

Unless Sabine was in a rush to return back to Hormone Island, where Astrid had to admit even being in their room together made her feel...antsy.

"Different," Astrid said firmly, as she started to shift through some dresses again, and not just because she couldn't see why anyone would want to wear something like that with all these other options. "I don't even really like that dress, it was just...sort of all I had."

And Astrid's first reaction was just to laugh a little, her mind sort of doing a soumersault to try to picture herself actually wearing a dress like that.

But she had played around with the idea of something unexpected, hadn't she?

"Wow," she said, "that is...that is..." She laughed again, reaching for the skirt of the dress to investigate what she was about to ask. "Just how high does this slit go up, anyway?"

And what were the odds that it just made her long legs look even more awkward and gangly in a complete opposite effect of the way the dress should be working with them.

"Blue might be a good color, though," she said. "That whole 'bringing out my eyes' thing."

She did kind of like it, actually, the more she considered it. She just might feel a little embarrassed about how much she did.

"Oooh," said Astrid, drawn in to another one and already feeling the paradox of choice starting to creep up on her. If anything, trying them on would probably eliminate a good few, but she might just have to wind up throwing them all in a pile and picking one at random. "That's different, I like that about it. But I don't know about the fact that it looks so..." Her nose wrinkled as she tried to think of a good word. "...holey?"

Exposed, maybe.

Astrid felt there was a debate there, on whether or not there really was a good time for that sort of thing and whether this time was it, but, at the same time, she'd already countered her own arguement with the reminded that it really wouldn't matter, she really could go out with a bang...

...uh, but not that kind.

Probably.

Maybe?

Astrid shook her head a little, because she did not need to think about that, who would even be interested?, and now her face was turning about the same shade of pink they were trying to avoid.

"I'll try it," she said, and then realized she had quite a few stacked up and Sabine not so much. "But we haven't found hardly anything for you yet. Let's see..."

Astrid was easily just searching for color, bright and vibrant like her roommate, but she had trouble feeling like any of them could really come close to matching Sabine in style. Or maybe just tricky really picturing Sabine all dressed up in something like a lot of these.

"Oh, this is pretty!"

"Try on pile," Astrid agreed, thinking it was getting to be quite the pile, but that was the whole point. "Do you just not like that particular brooch, or is just embellishments like that in general?"

And, since she was there and came across it, she tilted her head and held up somethng with a different kind of embelleshment and color, just to test it out.

"I figured you would," Astrid admitted with a smile. It was honestly hard to not think of orange first when attributing just one color to Sabine, but she didn't want to go too obvious with the first ones. Plus, the orange ones were few and far between.

"I wonder if there's be enough time to take something and add your own colorful embellishments," she mused, because it hadn't escaped her that if there was anyone at this school who would try to go and make their own prom dresses, it would be these two...

...even if Astrid was pretty sure her attempts would wind up some sort of watercolor tie-dye mess.
